Teachers
In addition to working with individual students and organising events in Cambridge, we also work with teachers to tailor our projects to their school. Below are some frequently asked questions. If there is anything else you would like to ask, email Laura McGarty, the Schools Liaison Officer.
Which schools do you work with?
All state schools in Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Suffolk, Rutland, associated urban Local Authorities Leicester, Luton and Peterborough and the London Borough of Southwark.
What about independent schools?
Both Pembroke and St Catharine's welcome the chance to work with any school, but the work of the Schools Liaison Officer is normally restricted to state schools.
What sort of things do you do?
Much of the work of the Schools Liaison Officer can be tailored to individual schools, in addition to larger events for multiple schools which run annually. Examples of tailored work include day visits to a Cambridge College for students (Years 10-13), ongoing information and support on all aspects of Higher Education by email or telephone and advice and information for teachers and parents including attendance at options evenings, parents' information evenings and other school events. Please get in touch to arrange any of the above. I'm also happy to come out to your school to talk to your students and to meet you and your colleagues to discuss how we can work together to give them the best opportunities.
What about younger students?
The visit days and other activities outlined above are aimed at students in Year 10 and above. We do however welcome enquiries about a tour of one of the Colleges accompanied by an optional short talk for Year 8s or 9s should you have an opportunity to pop in during a visit to Cambridge. In addition, resources for use in the classroom with younger students will be accessible online in the near future and will be signposted on this page when available.
Do you discuss or advise individual students?
We are very happy to act as a point of first contact, and to work with schools where only a small number of students may be considering Higher Education or Oxbridge.
How can I request a visit to Cambridge?
Email Laura McGarty and she will email or post you a copy of the School Visit Enquiry Form.
What if visiting is impractical for us because of cost, numbers, distance etc.?
There are hundreds of projects going on in the University of Cambridge from which schools and individual students can benefit by using the University's online resources. The University's resource directory is a great place to start, but do be in touch to find out more about the resources available.
How can I keep up-to-date with the opportunities on offer?
All schools and colleges within our Link Areas are posted information and invitations to the schools’ events run by Pembroke and St Catharine’s. Email Laura to ensure that our contact name for your school is current. In addition, the Cambridge Admissions Office produces an e-newsletter for teachers, tutors and HE Advisors who support potential applicants and wish to be kept up to date with developments at the University. You can sign up to receive this here.
