Pembroke College, Cambridge

One year visiting students

One year visiting students will be liable for both tuition fees and the College fee. The amount of tuition fee you will pay will depend on where you are resident.

  1. Junior Year Abroad (JYA) schemes from the United States. In almost all cases, JYA students are liable to College and University fees at the overseas rate (see overseas students for rates).
  2. Tuition fees for 1 year European students in 2011/12 are £3,375, the College fee is £4,707 in 2011/12. It is necessary to have resided full-time in the EU for three years prior to coming to Cambridge in order to qualify for this level of fee rather than the overseas rate.

One year visiting students will be required to provide a financial guarantee stating that they have sufficent funds to cover all their costs for the duration of their course at Cambridge.

Daily living costs

Accommodation and meal charges. Almost all Pembroke undergraduates live in college-owned accommodation for the full three or four years that they are in Cambridge. Students live in single study bedrooms either on the main college site or in college owned houses nearby. Rents are charged termly, for a nine- or ten-week period, and there is no need to pay rent during the vacations if you are not in residence. Rents vary according to the size of room and facilities offered. In 2011/12 most rents are in the range £64 per week - £99 per week. There is a flat rate charge for electricity; in 2011/12 this is £18 per term. A Kitchen Fixed Charge (KFC) is also required, and in 2011/12 this is £135.50 per term. Since Pembroke is within walking or cycling distance of all lecture rooms, libraries etc. there are limited transport costs while you are here.

Essential accommodation and kitchen overhead charges for Pembroke students are, thus, between £2,360 and £3,435 per year in 2011/12, excluding the cost of meals taken. There are no other compulsory charges.

Total estimated living expenses. It is estimated that in 2011/12 a student will need at least £7,170 to cover their living costs while in Cambridge. This includes your rent, KFC, food, entertainment, books, etc. but does not include travel costs to and from home nor the tuition fee, but it assumes that you will be resident for some vacation periods each year. Costs will rise each year.
