Study visits from teachers

Teachers are welcome for short periods in University vacations. Pembroke will provide free accommodation and one free meal per day.

Pembroke is offering short term study visits for teachers from schools and colleges throughout the UK. We invite applications from teachers who wish to spend short periods of study and reflection in Cambridge, for up to six weeks in total across a maximum of three years. The six weeks may be split between a number of vacations in the same or different years but visitors must come for at least a week at a time. We provide single accommodation, free of charge, and one free meal per day, but no stipend. Teachers on study visits are full members of our Senior Parlour (Common Room) during their time at Pembroke, and have access to all the facilities of the College and University (such as the University Library and Departmental libraries).

The number of such visitors that we can accommodate each year is not fixed, but it must obviously be limited. Your application must be supported by a statement of research or writing project which the facilities of Cambridge will support. We also encourage interest from those who wish to read more widely in the area of their teaching or simply to prepare for new courses, and find out more about Cambridge. Teachers with responsibilities at sixth-form level are particularly welcome to apply. Priority is given to teachers coming from schools or colleges where we have had little contact in the past. Following the final visit we also require a brief (one-two sides of A4) report of the work completed during visits.

In 2012 accommodation is likely to be available between 18th March and 15th April and 8th July and 17th September (excluding the Closed Period of 11th August to 1st September).

Those who are interested need to apply by 31st March for the Easter vacation and 31st May for the Summer vacation. Some Cambridge libraries may also be closed from time to time in vacations. The University Library, for example, closes for a week in mid-September.

Letters of application should be sent to the Admissions Tutor, Pembroke College, Cambridge, CB2 1RF. You should include a CV, a statement of between one and two sides of A4 detailing what you plan to do during each study visit. This can be either preparation for classroom teaching (new courses, etc) or academic research. If a long term project exists, the same proposal can be submitted, but with a clear indication of progress to date and what new research you will complete within the overall project during your visit. A letter of support from your school or college should also accompany your application. It is helpful if you could indicate your preferred dates, and the extent to which you can be flexible regarding dates.
