Academic Excellence
Pembroke is the community of people who live and work here.
Teaching and research are the life-blood of an academic community, and form the basis for Pembroke’s engagement with the wider world. But these two activities are increasingly expensive, and have not, for a long time now, been adequately supported by government funds. Attracting the best academics, and retaining them, now takes place in a highly competitive international market. To bring the best to Pembroke, we must provide the right support and facilities.
The College’s teaching and research Fellows need different resources at different stages in their careers. Pembroke’s needs, too, change over time, and we must respond to those changes to remain among the top colleges academically. We must create new fellowships in certain subjects to continue to provide the best kind of small-group teaching. We must also endow some core posts, to ensure that their funding is secure whatever the future holds.
We are therefore aiming to raise £20 million for the College’s endowment, to maintain Pembroke as a vibrant community of teachers and learners.
We must secure the academic and research resources – people, facilities and finances – that are required in order for us to remain competitive.
