The 1967 Bursary

Dear all,

We were delighted to catch up with many of you at the drinks reception at the Victorian Bath House, which set the tone for this anniversary year. Photos from the event can be viewed here. We hope you are now looking forward to our Fifty Years On Lunch at Pembroke on Saturday 1 July 2017.

As was mentioned at the drinks event, it would be wonderful if we, the 1967 year, could collectively give something back to the College to celebrate this reunion and our lifelong connection to Pembroke.

By collectively raising funds to establish the 1967 Bursary, we could help one or more individuals from underprivileged backgrounds to benefit from a Pembroke education. Times have changed since we were at College and tuition and living expenses now amount to roughly £16,000 a year. A student on a 3 year course can therefore graduate with nearly £50,000 of debt. For students from the very lowest income backgrounds, this is immensely off-putting and a big worry throughout their time here. Offering substantial and attractive student support packages is therefore important in order to ensure that the best and brightest students apply to Pembroke and that they are able to benefit from a Pembroke education without financial concerns.

The Bursary will be presented to the College at our Year Lunch at Pembroke on 1 July and then awarded in October 2017 to a student from a household income of less than £17,000 p.a. in the form of a £6,000 fee waiver. Below is a short video illustrating the impact of these bursaries for students who received them last year:

Our aim is to raise enough money to cover as many £6,000 bursaries as possible. There are 11 students who qualify for such support, so let’s try to raise enough to support more than just one of them. If each of us makes a gift of £100 per year for three years to the 1967 Bursary, we will easily beat this target. What’s more, an anonymous donor has agreed to match the first £6,000 raised; so if you give now, the value of your gift will be as much as doubled at no extra cost to you.

Please give whatever you can so the whole year group can present a generous 1967 Bursary to the College at our Year Lunch on 1 July. You can make your gift online here:
