The 1977 Bursary
We were delighted to catch up with many of you at the drinks reception earlier this week at the Victorian Bath House, which set the tone for this anniversary year. Photos from the event can be viewed here. We hope you are now looking forward to our Forty Years On Dinner at Pembroke on Friday 8 September 2017.
As was mentioned at the drinks event, it would be wonderful if we, the 1977 year, could collectively give something back to the College to celebrate this reunion and our lifelong connection to Pembroke.
By collectively raising funds to establish the 1977 Bursary, we could help one or more individuals from underprivileged backgrounds to benefit from a Pembroke education. Times have changed since we were at College and tuition and living expenses now amount to roughly £16,000 a year. A student on a 3 year course can therefore graduate with nearly £50,000 of debt. For students from the very lowest income backgrounds, this is immensely off-putting and a big worry throughout their time here. Offering substantial and attractive student support packages is therefore important in order to ensure that the best and brightest students apply to Pembroke and that they are able to benefit from a Pembroke education without financial concerns.
The Bursary will be presented to the College at our Year Dinner at Pembroke on 8 September and then awarded in October 2017 to a student from a household income of less than £17,000 p.a. in the form of a £6,000 fee waiver. Below is a short video illustrating the impact of these bursaries for students who received them last year.
Our aim is to raise enough money to cover as many £6,000 bursaries as possible. Last year, the 1976 group raised enough for four bursaries. If each of us makes a gift of £100 per year for three years to the 1977 Bursary, we can easily beat this. The other good news is that a gift to the 1977 Bursary will count towards the £75m goal of The Time and The Place campaign, recently launched by Pembroke, which aims to raise £15m for things like student support, as well as £60m for the Mill Lane project.
Please give whatever you can so the whole year group can present a generous 1977 Bursary to the College at our Year Dinner on 8 September. You can make your gift online here:
We hope that we can count on your support and look forward to seeing you at the dinner.
With best wishes,
