English Criminal Law
The course will introduce students to the basic doctrines and principles of English Criminal Law. It will begin with an overview of the building blocks of criminal responsibility: the different forms of mens rea, the rules of causation, and the principles underlying the imposition of criminal responsibility. It will then consider a number of different offences (including murder, manslaughter, grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, sexual offences and property offences) and defences (consent, self-defence, duress, insanity).
The course is ideally suited to students considering studying law, or already doing so in a jurisdiction other than England. However, it will also be of interest to students with the curiosity to find out and learn about criminal law in England.
No previous knowledge is required.
Transferable Knowledge and Skills
The course will be taught through decided cases, which will need to be read closely and thought about carefully. The analytical skills this entails are valuable in many fields.
