Jonathan Smales

Jonathan is the Founder and Executive Chairman of the Beyond Green Group (2001-current), a multi-faceted sustainability business with interests and investments in property, consulting and education enterprises.

At Beyond Green Jonathan and his teams provided lead advice on sustainability to: the 2012 London Olympic Legacy, ran the public consultation on the Olympic park and venues, the Earls Court and King’s Cross development and regeneration projects, and several large-scale urban extensions and regeneration projects in Manchester and Newcastle.  He wrote the climate change action plan for the city of Manchester, was a member of the Board of the Mayor’s Design for London, a CABE enabler and Design Review panelist and wrote the sustainability strategies for both CABE and the Housing Corporation (now the Homes and Communities Agency).

Between 1991 and 2000 Jonathan founded and ran the Earth Centre charitable trust, which became a national Millennium project for the UK and advised the Mayor of Hanover on the World Expo 2000.

Between 1986 and 1990 he was MD of Greenpeace (UK), an international trustee and Board member of Greenpeace Switzerland.  During this time awareness, membership, financial strength and campaigning effectiveness of Greenpeace across the world grew markedly.
