Programme Assistants (formerly TAs) vacancies

Pembroke College is recruiting Programme Assistants (PA) to work on its prestigious vacation programmes. Apply now for the best Easter and summer jobs in Cambridge!

Job description and specification

Since 1976, Pembroke College has run top-tier academic programmes for students from overseas universities, primarily in North America and Japan. Each Easter and summer, the Pembroke International Programmes Department welcomes international students who want take courses for credit and enjoy the amazing experience of living and studying in the University of Cambridge. PAs are vital to the success of these programmes. Rather like a 'College parent', they welcome visiting students, help them settle into their new surroundings and plan social events to entertain and educate them about Cambridge life. In some cases, PAs help with teaching and classroom support.

The ideal PA is lively, personable, relaxed (but eager), organised, interested, patient, and able to work effectively as part of a team. The job requires a good deal of social interaction, particularly on Japanese programmes where the aim is to encourage visiting students to improve their spoken English, and while all PAs enjoy the job (some very much so) they should always remember to make the well-being and happiness of the visiting students their first priority.

Duties and responsibilities

PA activities are very varied and require plenty of energy - a typical day might involve leading an Art History revision session, playing netball, having tea in Grantchester and karaoke - but there are core duties that every PA is required to perform, as follows:

  • Be the first point of contact for visiting students and provide a high level of pastoral care for them throughout the programme
  • Organise and lead a daily schedule of varied activities designed to appeal to all students, and accompany field trips and weekend outings
  • Be present at mealtimes and Formal Halls
  • Attend lectures and/or language classes and lead student revision sessions (not applicable to every programme)
  • Ensure teaching rooms are set up (daily) and taken down (at end of programme)
  • Assist with photocopying and equipment testing

Application requirements

All Cambridge undergraduate or graduate students are welcome to apply for these positions. Applicants should be in possession of a UK bank account and a National Insurance number, or have the means to obtain them before starting work (i.e. student visa/work permit). Around 70 PA places are on offer for 2010. All PAs receive a salary, plus full-board and accommodation for the duration of their course. Download an application form here. Please return completed application forms to Greg Lewis, International Programmes, Pembroke College. For more information please contact Greg Lewis in H8 or Carlos Podadera in H6, International Programmes, Pembroke College.

The deadline for Easter PA applications is 20th November 2009.

The deadline for summer PA applications is 5th February 2010.

All applicants invited for interview MUST bring their original passport with them.

Anyone who has previously worked for IP must re-apply.
