What to pack
What to pack
Pack as lightly as possible. You will need to transport your luggage from the airport to your room in Cambridge and back, and elevators are scarce both in London's public transport system and in Cambridge. You will also acquire additional items and souvenirs to bring home during your time in Cambridge, so leave room to transport them back. Cambridge summer days can be hot but it can get chilly in the evenings, so make sure to pack some warm clothes as well as summer wear. Essential articles of clothing include:
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Jeans or long trousers
- A light jacket and a smart outfit for Formal Halls (men should bring a suit, or at least a shirt and tie, while women should bring a cocktail dress or something suitable for a formal occasion).
Do not pack toiletries as these are cheap and easy to get hold of in the UK.
Bring sufficient quantites of any medications for the duration of the programme and carry them in your hand luggage.
If you forget something you will be able to buy anything you need when you get to the UK.
Travel Documents
Make copies of your passport, travel insurance and flight details and keep them safe and separate form the originals. If you have government approved photo ID bring this and use it while in the UK in place of your passport.
Electronic Devices
Electronic devices brought from the US to the UK will require a plug adaptor and most likely, a voltage converter. Voltage in the UK is 220v and outlets require a UK 3-pin plug. You can purchase adaptors at electronics stores in the US, at airports in the US and UK, or at shops in Cambridge. Many major electronic items (laptops, digital cameras, iPods) are dual voltage, so check the label: if it is labelled input 110-220v, this means it can handle the current in both countries. We advise against bringing US hairdryers as they tend to get overloaded and blow out, so buy a cheap UK model instead.
Linens and towels
Linens, blankets, a towel and a pillow will be provided for you and your sheets and towel will be changed every week.
