University of California Summer Sessions 1 & 2

Programme Dates: UCSS 1 - 24 June to 28 July 2012; UCSS 2 - 29 July to 1 September 2012

University of California Summer Sessions (UCSS) have been established at Pembroke College for over thirty years. Most participants are juniors or seniors from the University of California, but students at other US universities are also welcome to apply.

Participants take two courses for credit from the approximately ten options on offer in each session. Courses are available in the arts, social sciences and humanities, and each comprises a combined lecture and seminar programme of 30 hours in total. The academic element is complemented by a varied programme of social and cultural activities, and the aim of the course is to provide students with a more profound insight into modern British life and culture than would be attained by the casual visitor.

A range of field trips is offered, including a five-day tour of the North of England and Edinburgh, a weekend in London and a visit to Stratford-upon-Avon (the birthplace of William Shakespeare), in addition to course-related field trips.

Students are housed in single rooms in Pembroke College and most meals are provided on-site during the programme. Dining is an important part of College life, and during the summer students will be able to attend College dinners known as ‘Formal Halls’. These are three-course candlelit meals enjoyed in Pembroke’s beautiful dining hall with fellow students, faculty and PAs, and are a Cambridge tradition dating back hundreds of years.

The programme fee covers tuition, accommodation, a partial meal plan, and the cost of organised excursions. Students are advised to budget an additional sum to cover supplementary food, travel to and from Cambridge and personal expenditure.
