Accessions and Book Recommendations
The Library is constantly acquiring new publications. Click here to request that the Library purchase a particular book.
Entry to the Library
The Library has an electronic lock which is operated by your University card. Please take care of your card; it is also used for purchasing meals and for entry to the JP and Computer Room.
If the alarm sounds you MUST leave the building immediately.
Searching for books
In the Catalogue Hall outside the Library office there is a computer terminal (OPAC) which is dedicated to accessing iDiscover and Newton, our online catalogues. Please ask for help if you need it. There are two further terminals on the Ground Floor with internet access to be used for short periods only.
To borrow books you will need your University card. All books in the Library may be borrowed except:
1. Those marked ‘Not to be taken out’ or ‘Reference Collection’.
2. Periodicals (bound volumes or individual issues)
3. Reference books shelved in the Upper Reading Room
Loans and returns
Borrowing is restricted to members of the College. The self-check circulation computer is just outside the Library Office. Up to ten books (this includes DVDs) may be borrowed at any one time, for a period of term, and for the duration of a vacation. Late returns incur a fine of 20p per book per day. Books should be returned on the computer and then placed in the Book Returns box near the borrowing computer or, if they are heavy books, placed on the green trolley. The removal of any book or DVD from the Library without recording the loan is an offence against the College rules and a grave injustice to other users. A fine of £20 per book or DVD will be imposed.
Books may not be left on tables but they may be reserved overnight on the ‘Reserved Book’ shelves provided in each Reading Room. Please put a reservation slip on top with your name and the day’s date. If the date is unaltered for three consecutive days the books will go back into circulation and the papers removed.
Copyright law must be observed. If in doubt please ask the Librarian. There is a Book2Net Scanner, a green alternative to photocopying, in the Library which is free. Scans can be saved as pdf documents on to your USB stick. It’s simple to use but please ask for help if you are unsure.
Computers & Photocopying
Please use the Computer Room for IT facilities. There is also a printer/scanner/photocopier there for your use. If you have a problem with any of the College computers please see a member of the IT department in U10 or, if you have access to another computer, email email@example.com. Someone from the IT Department will be able to assist you during office hours.
