Skirts and Ties – Michaelmas

Skirts and Ties: A temporary art installation in hall

Tuesday 21st to Monday 27th October

This installation is part of PemWomen@30, a year of events to mark the arrival of women students at Pembroke. Suspended from the ‘Minstrels’ Gallery’, it represents the gender balance of all Pembroke students during the year 1984-1985 (not only students matriculating in 1984, but the whole student body).  During this year, there were 43 (9.7%) women and 400 (90.3%) men students at Pembroke. This installation represents that ratio through the display of 40 ties and 4 pairs of tights, a number also chosen due to its close relation to the number of women students that year, 43. All the materials have been donated, and the piece created, by current Pembroke undergraduate and graduate students. This installation will be renewed at intervals throughout the course of the 2014–15 academic year, reflecting the changing gender balance of the College throughout the years.
