Fire and Environmental Responsibilities for Hostel and Staircase Wardens

Hostel and Staircase wardens are required to carry out the following duties:

Fire Responsibilities

  • To complete a weekly check of all fire fighting equipment, including fire blankets, and check that fire signs have not been removed or defaced. There is a Fire Warden book in the Porter's Lodge which must be completed each Friday; failure to sign the book will result in your position as Fire Warden being reviewed.
  • To ensure all students know where their assembly area is and that they know that in the event of the fire alarm going off, all students know that they are to report to their assembly area.
  • To check the staircase if the Fire Alarm sounds to ensure evacuation is complete. However, your safety is paramount and you must not place yourself in any danger whilst carrying out this task.
  • To make sure that emergency exits, passages and landings are kept free from obstructions, and that there is not build up of rubbish in the gyp room or on the landings or staircases.
  • To be aware of any cooking using oil especially that involving frying pans, deep fat frying or woks in gyp rooms. This is the greatest fire risk to all of you on your staircase or in your hostel.
  • To ensure that any student on your staircase or in your hostel informs the Porters Lodge and yourself of any guest they have staying overnight in their rooms - this is for safety reasons only.

Environmental Responsibilities

  • Staircase wardens must recycle material generated within the Staircase. In particular, this mean transferring recyclable material accumulated in Gyp Rooms (or kitchens) to the College's recycling facilities in Chimney Court.
  • Hostel wardens must recycle material generated within the hostel. In particular, this means making sure that students use the correct recycling boxes for cans, bottles, newspapers etc. Hostel wardens must place outside, on the correct day or the evening before, the box/wheelie bin for recycling (there are fortnightly collections of these bins and details can be found at: www.cambridge.gov.uk/ccm/navigation/environment/rubbish-waste-and-recycling/. If you find you need more recycling boxes, please let Caroline Adams know.
  • To act as champion of recycling activity within the staircase or hostel.
  • To encourage energy saving by students on the staircase and in the hostel.
  • To ensure that lights and electrical appliances in communal areas are turned off when not in use.
  • To monitor energy consumption on the staircase or in the hostel.
  • Wardens are encouraged to look for additional, practical recycling and energy saving ideas. These suggestions should be made in the first place to the Student Green Rep.

Additional Responsibilities

  • To remove all out-of-date posters from the Staircase or hostel notice board.
  • To check First Aid boxes weekly and to replenish them from the College Surgery as necessary.
