Accessions
The Library is constantly acquiring new publications. See the most recent list of acquisitions.
The Library has an electronic lock which is operated by your University card. Please take care of your card; it is also used for purchasing meals and for entry to the JP and Computer Room.
Full term: every day 8am - midnight
Vacation: every day 8.30am -10pm
(except times specified by the Librarian, e.g. Christmas, New Year and Easter Bank Holidays).
The Computer Room in Foundress Court (CC) is open 24 hours.
If the alarm sounds you MUST leave the building immediately.
To borrow books you will need your University card. All books in the Library may be borrowed except:
- those marked 'Not to be taken out' or 'Reference Collection'
- periodicals (bound volumes or individual issues)
- reference books shelved in the Upper Reading Room
Borrowing is restricted to members of the College. The self-check circulation computer is just outside the Library Office. Up to ten books (this includes DVDs) may be borrowed at any one time, for a period of two weeks during term, and for the duration of a vacation. Late returns incur a fine of 20p per book per day. Please return books and DVDs to the Book Returns box underneath the borrowing computer. The removal of any book or DVD from the Library without recording the loan is an offence against the College rules and a grave injustice to other users. A fine of £20 per book will be imposed.
The Law Library is reserved for the use of law students and land economy students.
In the Catalogue Hall outside the Library office there are two computer terminals (OPACs) which are dedicated to accessing Library Search and Newton, our online catalogues. Please ask for help if you need it. There are two further terminals on the Ground Floor with internet access to be used for short periods only.
Books may not be left on tables but they may be reserved overnight on the 'Reserved Book' shelves provided in each Reading Room. Please put a reservation slip on top with your name and the day's date. If the date is unaltered for three consecutive days the books will go back into circulation and the papers removed.
- Smoking, eating and drinking (apart from bottled water), and bottles of ink, are prohibited in the Library. Water must not be kept anywhere near the computers. Persistent offenders will be sent to the Proctor, who may levy a fine.
- Books must not be marked. Readers who lose or damage books may be required to pay the full cost of replacement.
- Mobile phone conversations are not permitted in the Library. Noise must be kept to a minimum. Because of the acoustics in the Library, noise travels and makes it difficult for staff and students to concentrate. Persistent offenders will be sent to the Proctor, who may levy a fine.
- Please do not let strangers into the Library. All visitors, including contractors, should report to the Porters' Lodge in the first instance.
If you have a problem with any of the Library computers please see a member of the IT department in U10 or, if you have access to another computer, email help@pem.cam.ac.uk. Someone from the IT Department will be able to assist you during office hours. Laptops may be used in the Library, provided they do not disturb other readers.
There is a photocopier in the Library, opposite the Library Office. You may purchase a ticket in the Porters Lodge, using your University card, in denominations of £1 or £5. This ticket can be exchanged in the Library Office for a photocopy card. Cards are not sold in the Library Office. Photocopies cost 5p per sheet for A4 and 10p per sheet for A3. Copyright law must be observed. If in doubt please ask the Librarian.
