Dr Sam Barrett is the Director of Music Studies at Pembroke. Dr Barrett is a University Lecturer in Music, specializing in early medieval music and jazz. He was an Organ Scholar at Merton College, Oxford (1992-5) and a choral volunteer at Clare College, Cambridge (1995-8). He has since recorded several times as a baritone soloist, worked as an organist and choirmaster within Cambridge, and performed as a jazz trumpeter and pianist whenever possible.
Anna Lapwood is the Director of Music at Pembroke, where she conducts the choir and helps oversee musical activity in College. Anna was the Organ Scholar at Magdalen College, Oxford, for three years, from where she graduated with a first in Music. Anna performs regularly as both an organist and a harpist, having recently given solo recitals at Buxton Festival, The Three Choirs Festival and Westminster Abbey. She is also a singer, working regularly with Gareth Malone with whom she has recorded 2 albums. Anna is a prize-winning Associate of the Royal College of Organists, and an Honorary Fellow of the National College of Music, London.
Pianist Joseph Middleton is the College Musician at Pembroke. He assists Anna Lapwood, Dr Barrett and the PCMS in the furthering of musical activities within the College and curates and plays for the College’s highly regarded song recitals. He graduated from the University of Birmingham with an MPhil in Performance Practice and studied piano at the Royal Academy of Music. Joseph performs and records in the world’s major music centres including London’s Wigmore Hall and Royal Festival Hall, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Vienna’s Konzerthaus and at the Aix-en-Provence, Aldeburgh, Brighton, Edinburgh, Ravinia, Toronto and Vancouver Festivals. He records and programmes recitals frequently for the BBC and has a fast growing and critically acclaimed discography.
