Creative Writing in Cambridge

This month around forty budding writers are living at Pembroke College and spending time developing their work together.

The Creative Writing in Cambridge programme is co-convened by Richard Beard, Director of the National Academy of Writing, and the poet Kapka Kassabova. They are supported by four experienced supervisors.

At the core of the programme is a series of guest lectures, in which eminent writers come to share their views on the craft of the wordsmith. This year, guest lecturers have include David Almond, A. L. Kennedy and Terence Blacker. You can explore the lecturers and their works through our Pinterest board.

One young poet, Michael Brown, has found the programme especially inspirational. Through the help of contacts at Pembroke he has written a book of poetry, The Exhibit, which was published this week by SilverWood Books.

The Creative Writing in Cambridge programme has a full schedule of lectures, seminars, supervisions and social activities. Richard says that whatever the session, one thing remains the same for the students: ‘Come prepared to write. Whether it’s a pen and paper, your laptop or your phone, bring something to write with.’  Let’s hope for words, sentences, pages, chapters and books to flow.
