Richard Sykes QC Studentship in Corporate Law

The College is delighted to announce the creation of the Richard Sykes QC Studentship in Corporate Law.

The studentship will offer an individual from a financially disadvantaged background, who would otherwise be unable to afford it, the opportunity to undertake a Masters in Corporate Law at the University of Cambridge. The successful candidate will also become a member of Pembroke College.

The studentship will cover all University fees and include a grant to cover maintenance costs for the successful candidate, who will be selected on the basis of academic talent, potential and financial need. The aim is to assist the student towards a career in a major corporate law firm or as a barrister specialising in commercial matters.

The studentship has been created in memory of Richard Sykes QC (1954), who read English and Law at Pembroke. During this time he met his wife Sue, one of whose brothers was Richard’s contemporary at Pembroke. Following Cambridge, Richard was called to the Bar of Lincoln’s Inn in 1958 and became the leading company lawyer of his generation. He made a major contribution to the reform of company law and held various significant positions. On his retirement in 1999 he became chairman of the Financial Reporting Review Panel. He died in 2007, at the age of 73.

Thanks to the generosity of the Richard’s wife, Sue, the Richard Sykes QC Studentship in Corporate Law will run for two academic years, starting in October 2016.
