Sir Christopher Hum

Christopher Hum was an undergraduate at Pembroke, reading Modern and Mediaeval Languages (French and German).  He then joined His Majesty's Diplomatic Service and after studying Mandarin Chinese at Hong Kong University embarked on a career strongly focussed on China.  He was British Ambassador to China in 2002 to 2005 (and earlier to Poland).  On retirement from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office he was elected Master of Gonville and Caius College Cambridge (for 2006 to 2013), where he remains a Life Fellow.  He subsequently returned to student life at SOAS University of London, where he was awarded an MA in the History of Art and Archaeology of East Asia.  He comments and lectures on contemporary China.
