Black History Month at Pembroke

Harum Mukhayer (2016), BME Officer on the Graduate Parlour Committee and Yvonne Addai (2017), Ethnic Minorities Officer on the Junior Parlour Committee, have organised a packed weekend of events to celebrate Black History Month. The events all take place on the 20th and 21st October, with the majority being open to everyone. Full details can be found on the Facebook Event page.

Event information courtesy of Harum. The Gates Room is in the University Centre. All other rooms are in Pembroke.

Sat 20, 10 am, Nihon Room: We're kicking off with an Immigration Talk to help non-UK students be prepared for any potential visa issues that may arise. EU students are particularly welcome in addition to International students. Kamila (International Officer) is helping organise this so come along and join us for brunch and a chat about immigration! Brunch will be served.

Sat 20, 2pm, Nihon Room: We have BAME Police Officers from the Cambridge Constabulary coming in to share their experience of being BAME in law enforcement. They will also share tips on bike safety and registration and answer any questions you may have. Feel free to share widely and invite people. There will be snacks and drinks.

Sat 20, 5pm, Gates Room: Come to our panel on Race, Islam, Sex and Gender and hear from a Muslim hijabi rapper and an author of erotic Muslim literature. This will be an engaging (and provocative) conversation on decolonisation and intersectionality. There will be lots of pizza!

Sat 20, 7:30pm, New Cellars: Cansu has put together an excellent line up of some of the best comedians on the circuit. Join us for a Black History Month Stand Up, a Laugh-for-Change/ Pembroke collaboration. Entrance is only £5 and all proceeds go to refugee relief. See Facebook Event for full line-up.

Sun 21, 10am, Gates Room: Call me by my name! Are you a person with a name that people often struggle to pronounce? Do you like free brunch on Sundays? This event is open to anyone and everyone who has a name story they'd like to share. Join us for free brunch!

Sun 21, 5pm, Gates Room: Please share this with any BAME undergrads who you know might benefit from mentoring. This is a BAME Speed-mentoring event open to BAME undergrads from Cambridge and ARU. Sign up is here: https://goo.gl/us9QUL

Sun 21, 8pm, Graduate Parlour: AfroBeats Music Night in the GP, come for some music! Puboard will be open, bring your friends for a dance and join us for an evening of cultural appreciation.
