Students who get a First in their Tripos or equivalent College exams are placed at the top of the ballot, Foundation Scholars (second years or above) followed by College scholars (first years). This means that Scholars choose their rooms first in the ballot. In both the Foundation and College Scholars ballot, the order is determined by putting names in a 'hat' and pulling names out randomly - rooms will then be chosen in that order. Rooms chosen in the Scholar's ballot are for the following year of study (unless a student is on their year abroad in which case the room would be for the year that they return into residence). Scholars are not obliged to enter the ballot and should email the College Registrar if they wish to remain in the main ballot rather than entering the 'Scholars ballot'. It is not possible to carry forward this privilege to a subsequent year of study.
