Pembroke College Cambridge

Postgraduate Offer Holders

Financial Information

Financial Liability

All postgraduate students are liable to pay a University Composition Fee (UCF) which is dependent on your fee status.  This is determined by your nationality and place of permanent residence as well as the type of course you are taking and the subject you are studying.  Please go to the Postgraduate Fees  page of the University website for the correct University Composition fee for your chosen course.  Your fee status can be found on your self-service pages of CamSIS.  The Composition Fee is fixed for the duration of your course.

Maintenance (living costs)

The Student Registry estimates that you will need at least £17,668 in 2023/24 to cover your basic maintenance costs for a 12 month period: this includes room rent, food, books, intranet and personal expenses. Costs will rise each year of your course and it is advisable to build in a contingency amount to cover increased annual costs and/or unexpected expenses.  The Student Registry recommends that overseas students allow a further £350 as a settling-in amount.  Further information about maintenance costs can be found here.

The Financial guarantee and what it means

One of the conditions of your place at the Pembroke and the University is that you provide the Student Registry (aka Board of Graduate Studies) with an undertaking that you have sufficient financial resources to cover your costs (fees and maintenance) for the whole of your course.  The Student Registry will require you to complete and sign a financial undertaking form as one of the conditions of your offer that must be met; Pembroke is responsible for collecting payment of all your University Composition Fee.

Your place will not be confirmed by the Student Registry without this financial undertaking.

Under no circumstances should you sign the form if you are in any doubt whatsoever about whether you have sufficient funds for your fees and living costs. If you are admitted, neither Pembroke nor the University can undertake to support you financially in the event that you experience financial difficulties and you may be asked to leave if you are unable to pay your bills.

The production of this guarantee should be taken very seriously.

In case of financial difficulty, you will be expected to draw on the money in question and you will be expected to honour any promise to take out a loan made as part of your guarantee.

Therefore, if you do not have enough financial support available to see you through the full length of your course, you should not give a guarantee that you do, and you should not start your course or travel to Cambridge in the hope of doing so.

Students who do not pay their fees and agreed maintenance costs will not be allowed to continue on their course.

Loans

If you are applying for a loan to cover your fees and/or maintenance then please ensure that you have the loan money in place well before the start of October.  Simple production of proof that you have applied for the loan is NOT sufficient.  Loan cheques are sometimes sent to the College for you to collect and are often in the currency of the country where you applied for the loan.  Due to bank charges students often find it simpler to return these cheques to country of residence to be banked and the funds then transferred – the whole process can take a number of weeks so please plan well in advance for this.

The Student Registry will be handling all the necessary paperwork for US Graduate student loans.

Caution deposit

All students are required to pay a £350 caution deposit before the start of their course.  This deposit will be refunded once you have finished your course and graduated.  You will need to pay your deposit before you take up residence, preferably by bank transfer.  The College's bank details are available here.

Rooms are either in the College itself or in nearby College owned houses (hostels).  Students looking for a flat/couples accommodation should email the College Registrar directly, concerning possible accommodation, however please be aware that the supply of flats is limited.

In 2023-24 weekly rents for bedsits will vary from £121.90.93 to £187.44; the majority of the rooms are £161.23/week or above; rent differences reflect the variations in room size, view etc. Your rent includes electricity, heating, internet connection and insurance for student belongings.  Rooms are booked out from the Saturday before the start of Michaelmas term to beginning of September of the following year.  Any student on a taught course of one-year or less in duration will be contacted during the April/May before their course ends asking them when they would like to leave.  Rent is charged for a 13 week period (i.e. quarterly)

Room allocation -  the principal criteria that we consider are your preferred rent and whether you prefer a College or a hostel room, but please indicate on the online form any other details that you would like to be considered, such as being exceptionally tall (as we do have some attic rooms).  Although we shall do our best to please you, you should remember that it is not always possible to comply with all wishes.
