18th Nihon Affiliated High Schools Easter Programme

Earlier this month we had the pleasure of hosting the 18th Nihon Affiliated High Schools Easter Programme at Pembroke College.IMG_3456

This year’s programme welcomed 72 students from Japanese high schools affiliated with Nihon University and 4 accompanying staff members.

NHS Easter - Accompanying Staff PhotoAs part of the programme, students have taken part in a range of academic and cultural experiences, attending daily English language lessons and activities organised by our programme assistants (PAs). From Cambridge staples such as punting, visiting the Wren library and tours of the city to sunset walks, karaoke and even a disco, our students have experienced all the benefits Cambridge and Pembroke has to offer.

Our language instructors and programme assistants have thoroughly enjoyed working with the students, praising their enthusiasm and drive to improve their proficiency in English. One of the PAs, Ash, told us “the students are so fun to be around, they’re so polite and always want to talk to you. The cultural exchange is important and the students speak English to the PAs and try and speak English to each other.”

An accompanying staff member, Toru, first came to Pembroke in the early 2000s on the Nihon Teachers’ Professional Development Programme and was very excited to be back at Pembroke.

He recognised the very close relationship between Nihon University and Pembroke, adding “everyone knows Cambridge, the history and the education. For Japanese people it’s unrealistic [to experience this], but for our students it is a reality.”

We hope the students and accompanying staff cherish the memories and friendships made during their time at Pembroke.
