The Global Context of American Empire: A New Book from Professor Antony Hopkins

Professor Antony Hopkins is a distinguished historian who has written extensively on African history, imperial history, and globalization.

His latest book American Empire: A Global History offers a fresh perspective on America history in the context of global historical forces such as imperial expansion and globalisation.

Professor Hopkins’ previous works include Globalisation in World History (2001), Global History: Interactions between the Universal and the Local (2006), and British Imperialism,1688-2015 (with P. J. Cain, 3rd ed. 2016).  By writing from a global perspective Professor Hopkins hopes his latest work will appeal to historians of both US history and the history of other Western empires. His book also has relevance for specialists in International Relations and policy-making, for whom knowledge of the past may help inform the present.

Tony Hopkins is Emeritus Smuts Professor of Commonwealth History at the University of Cambridge and an Emeritus Fellow of Pembroke College. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of London, Honorary Doctorates from the Universities of Stirling and Birmingham, and is a Fellow of the British Academy.
