Lent 2018: A Snapshot of Events

January can be a slow month, but if you're wondering what to do with yourself, wonder no more!

Because terms at Cambridge are only eight weeks long they tend to quickly fill up with conferences, seminars, and events organised by College members.  There are events in music, politics, and science, so there should be something for everyone. Many of the societies listed below will be releasing term cards soon, so it's worth following their websites or social media to stay updated.

If it's talks on a wide range of fascinating topics that you're interested in, our student societies have it covered. The Stokes society, Pembroke's science society ("Not Just For Pembroke, Not Just For Scientists"), holds regular evening talks on all areas of science. Previous events have included talks on medicine, superconductors, and nanotechnology. You can follow them for updates on their Facebook page.

If you're more interested in politics, why not attend a Pembroke Politics society event? This society regularly invites interesting and influential speakers to the College to speak on key issues in politics.

For variety, Pembroke papers is a great place to go. This is a weekly seminar series in which Pembroke graduate students present their research. They also upload videos of many of the talks, so if you're unable to attend in person you can catch up online. The Lent term card is at the bottom of this blog.

We're also pleased to see our students arranging academic events outside the College. Undergraduate Helen Jennings (2016) is organising a conference in the Faculty of Law about abortion rights, whilst graduates Lizzie Marx (2016) and Lorraine de la Verpillière (2014) are running a seminar series on Art and the Senses, starting this week.  We're also looking forward to events organised to celebrate LGBT+ history month, following the success of last year's GP committee, and International Women's Day.  The panel discussion for LGBT+ month this year will be titled 'Queering our National Heritage', and will discuss representing and making visible LGBT+ national heritage.

In musical news, the Sir Arthur Bliss Song Series continues with an exciting recital from Mezzo-soprano Angelika Kirchschlager, who is accompanied by College Musician and acclaimed accompanist Joseph Middleton.  The recital will take place on the 28th January at 11am, and tickets are available from the Porters' Lodge or on the door.
