The Person Behind the Name Behind the Dinner: Harry Frank Guggenheim

The Guggenheim Dinner is an annual College function, but who was the person behind the event?

In this short video, we explore some of the key moments in the life of Harry Frank Guggenheim, who attended Pembroke from 1910-1913, and became an Honorary Fellow in the 1960s. Guggenheim was a pioneer promoter of aeronautics, beginning with the creation of a flying squad in his back yard in 1917, and continuing throughout his life.  Guggenheim was involved with Byrd's Arctic flight, saw Lindbergh off to Paris in 1927, and with his father, created the Daniel Guggenheim Fund for the Promotion of Aeronautics, which built the foundation of the industry by establishing schools of aeronautical engineering across the US. He was Ambassador to Cuba under President Hoover, and served in the US Navy.  Guggenheim was passionate about aeronautics, and the map of his life spans half the world as a result.
