Pembroke College Cambridge

Sports-people of the year? We think so!

This year, Pembroke students have been showcasing their skills in everything from rowing to table tennis.

Inter-collegiate sportCOLLAGE

The women’s football team had a successful Cuppers this year, beating favourites Jesus College to reach the final against Queens.  With a final winning score of 3-0, the Pembroke team can certainly be proud of their achievement, as can team Captain Katie Pringle (2014), who is in her final year.

Unfortunately the men’s squad, despite a great performance in the semi-finals, were unsuccessful in the finals against Fitzwilliam. Better luck next year!

BUCS/Varsity

At the university level Pembroke students have been contributing to Cambridge wins across the board.

In the British University Cross Country Championships, the women’s squad included Lizzy Apsley (2015), who ranked among the top female university runners in the country, coming 18th overall.

In Varsity Table Tennis Cambridge dominated, and the Men’s Firsts included Hampton Tao (2014) and Aland Chan (2015), two Pembroke students.  Cambridge 2nd seed Hampton Tao’s first match ended in defeat of Oxford 1st seed Michael Hahn, whilst Aland Chan “demonstrated ruthless efficiency” in his victories over Oxford, according to Blue bird news.

The Cambridge Basketball team included a Cambridge graduate; Léonie de Jonge (2014), PhD candidate and varsity veteran.  Graduate student Alexa Segal (2016) joined reserve team The Panthers this year.  The Blues team unfortunately lost to Oxford in Varsity, but have had several wins against other British Universities in BUCS. The Blues 2nd coach, Michelle Quay (2013) is another Valencian veteran.

Fourth year engineer Gaia Ladler (2013) is now a Varsity Champion, having been part of the first victorious team in the Women’s Varsity match, the inaugural 2016 match having ended in a draw.  Gaia was interviewed by student-run magazine Pembroke Street.

In rowing, the Lightweight Men secured their 4th successive win against Oxford at Henley this year, with Charlie Cummins (2013) in fourth seat and Dominic Hall (2013) as Cox.  In London, first year Emma Andrews (2016) stroked the Blondie boat in their successful race against the Oxford reserve crew this year, mirroring the success of the women’s Blue Boat in the Cancer Research UK Boat Races. Congratulations to both crews!

It’s great to see so many Pembroke students taking part in sports at all levels.  If you’ve been missed off this list, or if you’re on it and would like to see your sport featured more often, let us know!
