2019 Women in Science Residential

On 18th April, we welcomed 32 Year 11 students to Pembroke for a three-day Women in Science residential.

Now in its fourth year, the Women in Science residential provides a fantastic opportunity for female students interested in STEM subjects to explore these topics further in a university environment. During the event, students take part in academic sessions, visit a number of university departments, and have the opportunity to speak with female professionals working in the STEM sector.

Throughout the residential, the group took part in a number of academic sessions including Engineering, Chemistry, Maths, Computer Science, Zoology, and Physics. During these sessions, the students were involved in a number of practical activities such as making chemical cells, programming robots, and dissecting a pig’s head! We also held a discussion session and invited women working in a number of science-related industries to talk with the students regarding their journeys and experiences in the STEM sector. In the evenings the group took part in even more fun activities which included a ghost tour, film night, a quiz, and a formal dinner in the dining hall.

We’d like to thank all the students who attended for their hard work and positive attitudes throughout the residential. We’d also like to thank all the academics who offered their time to deliver the subject sessions, and our student helpers for their invaluable support throughout the event.

We hope the Women in Science participants had a great time at Pembroke and we wish them every success in the future!
