Pembroke College Cambridge

The 18th William Pitt Seminar - Live and Let Die?

The 18th annual Pembroke College William Pitt Seminar will take place on Friday 13th October 2023.

Chaired by Pam Garside, the 18th annual Pembroke College William Pitt Seminar will be introduced by the Master Lord Chris Smith and asks 'Live and let die: how will society adapt when we all live longer?'

Technologies, medicines and augmentations are developing apace, all aiming to extend quantity and quality of life. But how do societies’ values change when more people are retired? Should we focus on improving quality of life rather than longevity per se? How should businesses and governments respond and prepare for a future when we all live longer, and all the associated social implications? Average life expectancy varies hugely depending on your place of birth – how do we ensure equitable access to future developments in healthcare for everyone, everywhere, all at once? The 18th William Pitt Seminar will consider the implications of ever-ageing populations on individuals, organisations, and societies across the globe.

Our Chair will be Pam Garside, Chair of Cambridge Angels, Fellow at the University of Cambridge Judge Business School. Pam is also the Founder and Partner of Newhealth, and Chair of the Cambridge Health Network.
