Pembroke College Cambridge

Online Readiness

To study on the Online Summer Research Programme, you'll need access to a computer as well as the personal commitment to independent study.

You'll need access to a computer with a webcam and internet access to attend your online supervisions, conduct research and submit work, and participate in online programme events.

What video platforms will we use?

You'll decide with your supervisor which online video platform works best for you both, that way it'll be easily accessible. In general, we expect it to be: Google Meet, Skype, Microsoft Teams or Zoom.

Events held by the International Programmes department will likely be held on Zoom.

As the platform you use for supervisions will be decided between you and your supervisor, we hope you won't experience any IT issues. We're unable to offer any IT support on the programme.

Key questions to consider

When applying for a place on the Online Summer Research Programme, please think about whether you:

  • are able to dedicate the time required to successfully complete the programme alongside your other commitments?

You'll be expected to spend 42 hours of independent study each week while on the programme. This equals 21 hours of independent study per supervision hour as you'll have two supervisions each week over four weeks.

  • have adequate computer and IT skills to complete an online programme?
  • have an appropriate set up (e.g. a study space in a calm, quiet environment) needed for independent study wherever you will be based?
  • have a reliable personal computer and Internet Service Provider?
  • have good internet speed to attend online supervisions and other online programme events?
  • have a back-up plan in place in case you have issues with your set up, internet connection and / or device?
  • need any special arrangements or support that you have to discuss with the International Programmes department when applying for the programme?

You are best placed to decide whether the Online Summer Research Programme method of teaching and learning is most suited to you!

We hope it is and look forward to receiving your application. Here's how to apply.
